July 4, 2010 Holiday
Short and sweet (I know, you did not think that was possible with me) --- the shop is closed on Saturday, July 3, 2010 in honor of our nation's birthday. All of us at The Borne Quilter will be giving thanks for where we live. We hope you have a very happy and safe holiday weekend.
Introducing The Blog
Renee made her first blog entry today. Check it out on the website at www.thebornequilter.com. I suspect more blog entries will be coming on a semi-regular basis.
Shop Hop Update
The Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler! Shop Hop is right around the corner – August 12-14, 2010 (that’s a Thursday, Friday and Saturday). In a word, it is going to be FABULOUS! in my ever so humble opinion. We just got through attending the final meeting of the various shops which are hosting the Shop Hop and here is the “skinny” on what is going to happen.
First, however, for those of you who do not know what the heck a “Shop Hop” is, a brief definition is in order, refined to fit this particular shop hop:
Here’s the official definition as authorized by the 6 shop owners:
“Our Shop Hop is a multi-quilt shop event, presented as a time to have fun and promote quilting enthusiasm! Quilters are encouraged to visit participating shops for new inspiration in their quilting endeavors.” (Gag me with a spoon!)
Here’s the unauthorized real definition:
Picture this – 6 queen bees (the six shop owners), all of whom believe they possess the sweetest honey (fabric and other quilting necessities) in south Louisiana - and all of whom are correct in their own right. In order to share the taste of their sweet nectar, they invite each other’s bees (friends like you) to their respective hives (shops). The result is a whirlwind of buzzing (craziness and fun), the likes of which you have to see to believe.” [Okay, when I asked Renee what she thought about this definition, she said it sounded like all of my other “stuff”. I am not sure what she meant by that, other than her comment that at least it is “creative”. Maybe what she meant to say was “gag me with a spoon!]
Oh, well, enough “creativity”--- like I said, here’s the skinny on what is going to happen:
1. As a brief reminder, the hosting shops are:
Amelia’s in Baton Rouge
Fabric Krazy in Baton Rouge
Mama’s in Independence
Bright Hopes in Mandeville
The Quilting Niche in Houma
The Borne Quilter in Lafayette
2. “Passports” will be available for purchase starting July 15, 2010 at any of the participating shops. The cost of each passport is $5. With the purchase of a passport you receive a $5 coupon to apply toward your purchase of $25 or more at each shop. In case you are having a difficult time in figuring this out, that’s right, a total of $30 dollars in coupons, if you purchase $25 at each shop, for a cost of $5. I mean, come on---DUH!!
3. Each shop will have their own Shop Hop quilt, with kits available for purchase. Your passport entitles you to receive a free block pattern from each shop.
4. The Grand Prize this year is a Perfect Caddy System from Hinterberg Design, which retails for $450. No, it is not a caddy for your better half’s golf game, but for your quilting paraphernalia. To be eligible for this and also for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize gift baskets, you have to force yourself to visit all of the shops in the shop hop – oh, shucks!
5. In addition to the Grand Prize and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes, your $5 passport entitles you to register for a shop gift basket from each shop which you visit. Each shop’s gift basket will have a retail value of $250! You do not have to visit each shop to be eligible for this gift basket.
Folks, it’s a no brainer!!!
Shop Hop Bus Tour
Remember my hair brained idea about putting a bunch of you folks on a bus and touring the 6 shops in the Shop Hop? Well, right now it looks like it just might happen. We are very close to the necessary number of commitments- we are 4 shy right now. Once we have that minimum number then it is an absolute GO and the rest of you who were waiting on the sidelines can jump right in, subject of course to availability.
If you are interested, here’s the itinerary and what you’ll get for $125:
1. We are planning for the bus to leave Lafayette at 8:00 a.m. Friday, August 13 (remember, in the initial e-mail I erroneously stated Friday, August 12-- it is Friday, August 13);
2. We will shop at Amelia's and Fabric Krazy in Baton Rouge in the morning and early afternoon. Not sure yet about lunch but we still have time to figure that out (lunch is not included in the price);
3. From Baton Rouge we will go to Mama's in Independence and from there to Covington/Mandeville. We hope to have enough time that evening for you to shop in Mandeville at Bright Hopes, which closes at 6:00 p.m. If not, we will start the day at Bright Hopes then continue from there.
4. We will stay at the Hampton Inn in Covington, which is included in the price. I am not sure about dinner that night, but, again, we still have time to figure that out (dinner is not included in the price);
5. Saturday morning the hotel offers a full breakfast, which is included in the price. After breakfast, we will travel to Houma to shop at The Quilting Niche, leaving the hotel no later than 7:30 to be in Houma at around 9:00 a.m. and then finish up in Lafayette at The Borne Quilter---save your money, please!! I suspect we'll be back in Lafayette by 3:00-4:00. Again, I am not sure about lunch yet (also no included in the price).
So, time is running out. We need to let the bus company know by July 6. Let us know either by e-mail (bornequilter@thebornequilter.com) or phone (337-408-3730) if you want to be put on the list. As for payment, you can either come by and pay in person, call with a credit card number, or mail a check. In any case, you need to be paid in full by July 6 in order for us to reserve your spot.
Well folks, that's it for now.

ANNIVERSARY SALE
Have you marked your calendars, yet, for the 2nd Anniversary Sale of The Borne Quilter? As our thanks for your patronage over the past 2 years, from Thursday, June 24 to Saturday, June 26, 2010, we will celebrate our 2nd anniversary, whose traditional gift is cotton, with a “cotton” sale. Here’s some generalities and specifics about what is waiting for you to walk out of the store with, via the checkout counter, of course.
HANG TAGS, GALORE!
As most of
you “regulars” are aware of, scattered throughout the shop on a daily basis are
many bolts of fabric which are on sale, identified by hang tags on
them. These fabrics are on sale for 40%
off their regular price on a daily basis.
Well, it’s been a while since hang tags have been placed on additional bolts. Yea, you guessed it, there will be considerably more bolts of fabric scattered throughout the shop with hang tags on them. So, if you’ve been eyeing a particular piece of fabric (or 2 or 3 or more), maybe you’ll be lucky enough to find a hang tag on it next weekend.
KITS, FATQUARTER PACKS, BRIOCHES AND BEIGNETS
Our
selection of Kits is rapidly growing. Several
of them will be on sale for 40% off their regular price.
You will
also be able to pick up certain select Fat Quarter Packs for 40% off their
regular price.
The same
goes for certain select Brioches, our version of jelly rolls - 40% off their regular price.
Not to be left out of the party, certain select Beignets, our version of charm packs, will be on sale for 40% off their regular price.
REMNANTS
Located
under one of the front windows in the shop is our stash of remnants, which are
normally sold at 25% off the regular price of the fabric.
Well, for this sale all remnants will be sold for 40% off the regular price of the fabric. From a pricing standpoint, it doesn’t get much better than this!
SIDEWALK SALE (sort of)
I’m really excited about this, not
because of the fabric which will be offered but because of how it will be
displayed. You see, I have been on Renee
to have a sidewalk sale for months, but was met with a brick wall until
recently. What knocked that wall down
was the building of 2 rolling shelves, which are now in the classroom where all
of the clearance fabric on it is on sale on a daily basis.
Well, those shelves will be on the sidewalk, sort of, with all of the fabric on it on sale for $4/yd. Folks, that’s pretty much at cost! Next weekend is a buying opportunity for you on this fabric!
The “sort of ” part is that the sidewalk sale will take place in the classroom, in light of my not wanting all of our customers of the female species to have their makeup melt away on the real sidewalk in light of our good old south Louisiana weather.
FAT QUARTER SALE
Now, this is in connection with the Sidewalk sale. All of the fat quarters which are normally housed in the classroom on or near the rolling shelves will be on sale for $1.25 each, as crazy as that sounds (note, this only applies to the fat quarters in the classroom, as I had to put my foot down). I mean, even if you don’t like the darn thing, you should be able to find some use for it, don’t you think?
BOOKS AND PATTERNS
Of course, you may need some ideas on how to use all of the fabric that is on sale. So, we will also have a selection of books and patterns on sale for, you guessed it, 40% off their regular price.
DOOR PRIZES, ETC.
Although I am not certain what these will be, there will be a drawing for 2 door prizes. Renee’s door prizes are usually pretty cool. Anyone who visits the shop can register for these.
Of course, there will be the usual assortment of refreshments and food for you to keep your energy level up as you participate in wiping us out of our inventory to make room for more!
SHOP HOP UPDATE
Okay, so I made a mistake in the last newsletter - the proposed bus tour/trip is August 13-14 (Friday and Saturday). The route will take you to all of the quilt shops in the Shop Hop (Amelia's, Fabric Krazy, Mama's, Bright Hopes, The Quilting Niche and The Borne Quilter). The price is definitely $125 and will include the cost of the bus for Friday and Saturday and the hotel in Covington on Friday night.
Although several of you have let us know that you are interested, we need firm commitments by July 5---payment of the $125. If you want to join us for this trip, you need to let us know, soon, so that we will know if this will happen.
Okay, folks, that's it for now on this father's day. The US Open is coming to an exciting climax. So.....
